The above define the entire food regime of my piiickkkky three year old. Including a few other healthy choices such as donuts with "snow" or powdered sugar donuts, french fries, chicken pasta salad, steak (ok getting a little healthier) and chips. We have tried everything to break this picky eater habit, but it continues to progress....causing frustration all around, and a little worry on my part that he is not getting the nutrients he needs. Pediatrician told me to add some V8 Splash Juice or Motts Medley with the veggies in it, and I have done that successfully, with some vitamins.
Any other mama's have picky eaters in their houses?
Oh, and he will eat mac n cheese!
Now, I cook at least 4 nights a week, and always have 1 or 2 veggies to go with the meal. So, it is not in lack of trying that his menu choices seem so limited.
Normal 3 year old maybe, but today it is making me laugh as he gets home from school stttaaarrrvving because he wont eat lunch, and can put down a bag of Goldfish (I forgot to mention he likes these too) some days.
He is in a high height and weight class, them being proportional to each other, and so he is growing well.
So cheers to the chicken nugget loving kids out there, who would have thought a little invention like that would provide 75% of the diet for some American children:)!
Long before I ever thought about having kids, I heard Mario Batali say that the best thing you can do to keep from having picky eaters is to never make a big deal about eating something new. You make dinner, put it on the table and everybody eats. If it's something new, you don't mention it. If the child doesn't like something, you don't push it and you wait a couple weeks and try it again. I have twin toddlers (almost 20 months) and so far this has worked. They eat Indian, Thai, Italian, and all kinds of other foods. They eat loads of veggies and fruits, too. Now, I admit that they aren't even two yet. They very well may change in the coming years, but so far it's worked great for us.
ReplyDeleteGood luck to you. I hope your little guy comes around to a more balanced diet!
Thanks!! I hope it works for you in the future too! He used to eat salad, and anything else we put in front of him until he reach 2 and 1/2. Hopefully your twins will keep with the good habits:)!
DeleteBoy are we struggling with a picky eater around here too!! It actually helped me to modify what I serve around here. Since he only wanted to snack, I eliminated all snacks from the house. Now, it is breakfast, lunch and dinner with the only snack being fruit. My little guy won't touch veggies with a 10 foot pole. But we always put them on his plate and let him look and play with them. I actually just blogged about how picky he was last week and got some FANTASTIC advise from experienced moms out there. You might want to read their wisdom? It helped us out a lot since we are so terribly worried about his nutrition intake! (Carbs. Carbs. Carbs.!!!!) Good luck :)
